Ripples

it's a gray world
this clay world
let all sinners cast the first stone
and the ripples
spreadin' out
from the point of impact the stone has found
the ripples ring around
and they toss in more stone
stone and stone and stone again
little walls beneath the waves
little stones coverin' graves
and the ocean of this life
is broken into pools by hated strife
and i just want to walk without a sound
as the ripples ring around
have you ever stood
still in the swells
as the black ocean breathes?
feelin' the tide come
feelin' the tide go
feelin' the waves to and fro
take a look down
at your unmoving legs
the ripples ring around
what happens? when you hold that stone
stop your arm midthrow
well the waves come
and the waves go
and roll the jagged stone
'cause time comes
and time goes
and makes sand of a toumbstone
so a sandy beach
from the stones' breach
the ripples still ring 'round
and as the seas go down to the depths they've found
don't you know those ripples are still ringin' round?
and the sand is lyin' on the beach
where the stones used to reach
and if we lose, if the stones pour in
it's still as much dust to the wind
